Floral Focus: Nigerian Wedding

Nigeria is located in West Africa, and like many African countries; there are several different tribes. Each tribe has their own marriage customs and if doing a traditional wedding, each one will be unique to that tribe. I will be focusing on a Westernized Nigerian wedding. These weddings sometimes have a mix of traditional with Western decor. This is more popular amongst people in Nigeria with money and of course Nigerians in the West.

Flowers have never been a huge part of African weddings, but due to the internet and Western influence; it is now a big part. A new trend with Nigerian weddings is an explosion of floral. They are embracing the trend in full force. Floral focus is where flowers have become a central part of the wedding decor instead of just an afterthought. The greatest amount of flowers are on the sweetheart stage. It is like a mandap in an Indian wedding where the bride and groom are the focal point and sometimes the parents of the bride and groom are seated on either side of the couple.

On the stage, there are two chairs or a loveseat in the center of the stage. This is very common in most, if not all Nigerian weddings because it tradition. To create make flowers the focus of your wedding, the wall behind the stage can be decorated with lots of fresh red, cream, and purple roses while the guest tables can have very minimal decor. If you don’t want a wall of flowers, you can always use varying shapes and sizes of gold vases with roses, tulips, cascading orchids, and any other flowers in bloom. So the bottom of the stage doesn’t feel so empty, you can add pots of green hydrangeas and eucalyptus leaves to make it more grand.

For those brides who have the money and love to go big, you can have a garland of cream roses wrapped around both columns of the stage with strands of orchids hanging down to the floor to create a sort of cave for you and your hubby. The top of the stage of course would be covered in orchids with shorter strands of orchid over your heads. For a touch of color, white vases with floral arrangements of red roses and pink lilys can be placed behind the couple. As for the bottom of the stage, we can’t leave that empty, so why not add balls of silk flowers with small vases of blood red roses? That will definitely keep all the focus on you and your groom.

For the simpler bride, an arch of cream roses with football mums will do the trick. You can also have the same flowers made into an arrangement for a small table in front of your sweetheart chairs. This trend is really beautiful because it draws the eyes to the most important people, the bride and groom. It works great also if you want flowers at your wedding but cannot afford to have arrangements at every table.
